Throughout all time, the earth has brought us food. Farming techniques dictate not only how the earth is affected, but we the people as well. Restoration Village Farm, sprawling 36 hilly acres in the foothills of the John Crow Mountains outside Port Antonio offers visitors an experience of natural, self-sustaining farming in a setting that will take your breath away.
Your driver will bring you from your lodging to the starting point of your tour. You will be greeted by your Guide and an Assistant Guide who will indulge you in all your curiosities of Jamaican farm life. Wear good walking shoes, as this is a one-hour walking tour. Clear walking paths and marked vegetation, as well as the very knowledgeable guides will have you examining plants which some are familiar, and others will have you saying, “Oh! I always wondered what that looks like!” The list of crops grown on the Farm is too numerous to list, but a few are cocoa, pineapple, banana, avocado, gungo peas, pomegranate, star apple, coconut and many medicinal herbs. The “Village Area” contains restrooms, first aid, the medicinal herb garden and the lunch area where you will look over acres of hilly farm and mountainous backgrounds. During a break in this area you will be treated to a refreshing coconut water.
The last section of the tour takes you along Mongoose Springs, which is a delightful and awe inspiring spring with waterfalls along the picturesque walking path. A crystal clear relaxing pool has been set into the natural stone area with spring water constantly flowing to beckon you to indulge. Take advantage of the changing rooms and indulge in a swim. At this point, the Tour is finished, but you are very welcome to hike along marked paths that wind throughout the property.
Tours are Monday - Friday at 9:00 am, 11:00 am and 1:30 pm. If possible, we suggest the morning tours, because you are invited to take part in the “Farm Hand Lunch”. Every day at noon is when lunch is served for the workers and visitors. Meals consist of meat purchased locally and crops grown on the farm. It is delicious! You really don’t want to miss it. (and it doesn’t cost extra!) With notice, particular food requests (vegan, vegetarian etc) can be honored.
On a practical note, there are three very clean restrooms placed throughout the acreage, as well as a changing room by the spring fed pool, a very welcome benefit.
Restoration Village Farm operates very eco-friendly. The water supply is gravity fed and electricity is by solar powered generator. The Farm has received all proper health, safety and guide training and certification.
A trip to Restoration Village Farm is an excellent choice for parties, groups, events, boy scout troops, church groups etc. Camping sites are also available on a limited basis.
