Cactus Garden
It was the last great intervention of César Manrique in Lanzarote.
The eyes of the Lanzarote artist saw beyond the degraded space that was an old rofera, in Lanzarote the quarries from which arid are extracted are called thus, to create a very particular home for cactus flowers from all over the planet.
Surrounded by the largest plantation of tuneras on the island dedicated to the cultivation of the cochineal, a product that had a great economic relevance in 19th century Lanzarote, the Cactus Garden houses around 4,500 specimens of 450 different species grouped from 13 families of cacti arrived from the five continents. The greenness of the plants contrasts with the blue of the sky and the black of the volcano to create a harmonic explosion of color that impresses the visitor. The singing of small birds and the indefatigable hum of insects that enjoy their particular oasis are the only sounds that break the peace and silence that reign in the place.
High monoliths of volcanic ash, footprints that keep the memory of what the place was intact, defy in size the large specimens of plants from America, Africa or Oceania, while up, defiantly at the top of a small hill, scan the horizon one of the last mills of millet that remains on the island, where gofio was ground, dating from the beginning of the 19th century.
