There is lots of talk about eating healthy and yet still most people are not willing to pay more for good food. In the past years I have had much discussion with people about healthy food. It may be a bit more expensive to buy organic or even good fresh veggies, but making a commitment to healthy eating is a responsibility everyone has, for themselves and for their children.

What could be more important than health? How foods are grown or raised can make a big impact on both your health and the environment.

What does “organic” mean?

Organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Organic crops must be grown in safe soil, have no modifications, and must remain separate from conventional products. Farmers are not allowed to use synthetic pesticides, bio-engineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. This should be the natural way of growing food, so why should people pay more money to eat natural food? Why should people have to eat genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) which are plants or animals whose DNA has been altered? Hopefully in the future they shouldn’t have to.

By keeping the prices high, people with a low income are made to believe that they can’t afford good food, so that all the bad food will be bought and the good for will also be bought by the higher income people. This way the companies win on both sides. It is not always possible to buy organic product on the island but when we can we do! Our vegetables are mainly coming from abroad, most of them are frozen which keeps them fresher than traveling in a container for weeks or days, from somewhere across the ocean.

The truth is when you eat real food you need less food. Pesticides by nature are designed to kill, they are poison. So since I have the choice I choose, I don’t know why anyone could logically buy food with poison sprayed on it. More and more children are having allergies and asthma, wheezing, rashes and other skin problems, ADHD or birth defects. As the saying goes “your are what you eat “!
