The origin of the family is from Asia Minor, as well as many other inhabitants of the island, who, during the difficult years, crossed over and settled in various parts of Lesvos.

Protouli's parents and four brothers choose the province of Plomari to start their new life. George, born somewhere in 1880 is the only one who remains on the island. The other three are emigrating to South Africa.

At that time, the main agricultural occupations of the inhabitants were viticulture and olive production.
In summer they harvest and in winter they pick the olives. Since then, the long tradition of the island in winemaking, the production of spirits and olive oil begins. Phylloxera, however, hits the vineyards of the island and so the cultivation of olive trees grows even more.

George Protoulis, at the end of the 19th century, owns 30 acres. The crop is painfully harvested and must be transported with difficulty to the small, traditional, old type olive presses of the area.

George's son, John, Kostas' father, decides to work harder and invest in local olive oil. He buys another 50 acres of land and in 1975 he builds their first olive mill, in Megalochori.

 

Of the three sons of Giannis, Panagiotis undertakes the marketing of their products in South Africa and Giorgos and Kostas live on the island and develop the company. Unfortunately, Giorgos leaves early in life and so Kostas undertakes to continue the family tradition. It constantly invests in improving the quality and increasing the quantity of olive oil produced. In 2005 he acquires a second, stone olive mill, in Trygonas, while at the same time he buys land, reaching today to cultivate about 500 acres, mountainous and semi-mountainous -mainly- olive groves.

The modernization of the two mills, a new, state-of-the-art bottling unit of standardization, a smaller one for experimental oilings and the development of the visitor are in his ongoing plans for the progress of the family business.

Besides, the two eldest of Kostas' three sons, Giannis and Paraschos, are already actively involved with it, determined to put their own little stone in the future of the company. Giannis, having studied Business Administration at the University of the Aegean, is gradually taking on a more administrative and managerial role. Parashos, a man of more production, learns every day, next to his father, the secrets of cultivation, care and oiling.

From Asia Minor, a dynamic great-grandfather George, to John and Paraschos, much has changed in the olive production of the island of Lesvos and in the Protoulis family. But their goal always remains the same: the production of a high quality olive oil, with a unique aroma and the characteristic, fruity taste of the finest, natural olive juice.

Whether it is the harvest season, which is the most painful, whether it is spring or summer, the mind always runs in time and in the work that needs to be done. And they are never few, the hours never arrive.

Control of trees and fruit development, treatment of unpredictable and extreme weather phenomena that are increasingly thickening, improvement of transport conditions, production and packaging methods, even lower acidities, even better quality. Every year you struggle to overcome yourself. Great reward when you succeed, and you have in front of you an excellent olive oil in body, in color, in aroma. Rest. For a while...
